It was a strange city, and seemed to have been cast up in the valley one winter’s night like some prehistoric creature that was now clawing its way up the mountainside.
– Chronicle of Stone by Ismail Kadare, born in Gjirokastër, 1936

While staying in one country for seven months seems counterproductive to our mission to “see the world”, Albania’s proximity to Greece, Italy and the Balkans makes it a great hub for taking short, five- or six-day trips via ferry or bus to explore nearby destinations. After Reid laid out a plan to take one trip a month, she made the UNESCO city of Gjirokastër, Albania our first excursion. So, in February we got to see this beautiful stone city that’s only a short bus ride from Sarandë.
We hope you enjoy the photographs!

The pictures are fantastic. I cannot imagine rock roofs. That sounds strange.
