In April Robie and I visited the tiny, mountainous country of Montenegro.

We stayed in the port city of Kotor and reveled in the towering cliffs that plunged dramatically into the bay, enjoyed a boat trip to remote islands and wandered around the picturesque old town photographing green doors and the town’s stray cats.

Montenegro means ‘Black Mountain.’ And while spring had turned them green during our visit, the new growth only enhanced their majesty.

The bay was perhaps the most stunning we’d ever seen.

The harbor, shaped like a ribbon tied in a bow, is hidden from the sea and only accessible by rounding a peninsula then traversing a narrow inlet between two peaks. But once inside, you’re surrounded by tall mountains dotted with quaint seaside villages and an island monastery.

If Turkey is known for their blue and green tiles and Greece its whitewashed village, then Kotor is famous for green doors and shutters.

But what visitors remember most about the old town are the cats.

Introduced by sailors, the first felines in Kotor rid the region of mice, snakes and rats and earned the appreciation of the locals. Today they’re a symbol of good luck and well looked-after with cat statues and a few dedicated cat stores!

But of all the cats in Kotor, Robie and I got to know this little cutie who waited patiently on our balcony each morning for us to let him in for scratches then laid down with Robie to read.
